Is it weird to read and re-read your own writing and enjoy it? I feel like some of my old works (I'm talking like 5-6 years ago) were written by a completely different person. It honestly just feels like reading someone else's stories. It's kind of neat to see how I used to write and think back then. Photographs are one thing, memories are intangible but writing? Ah, that's a whole history book right there.

I was rambling on the issue of museums and human remains and how certain populations are more likely to have their bodies put on display to be gawked at and then went "well I guess the Pompeii casts were of Europeans. there are bones in there right?" and Googled it to make sure, at which point I confirmed that yes there are bones in there, but more interestingly DNA testing revealed that a cast of an adult holding a child everyone assumed was a mother and child were, in fact, a man and a kid entirely unrelated to him. Honestly that's more moving to me. Maybe they were connected in a way other than blood, but maybe a stranger saw a child when the world was ending and thought the one thing he could do was hold them.

do you know how many people are mad that authors use "growled" as a word for "said"? it's just poetics! they do not literally mean "growled," it's just a common replacement for "said with force but in a low tone." it's normal! do you hear me!! help me i love you please let me out of here!!!

Need a teen! Bruce au where he’s exactly like Justice League! Batman and Battinson in one. That mf put the fear of every god in Ra’s Al Ghul.

Everytime he’s in a room with someone over 30 “Teenagers” by My Chemical Romance plays in the background.

Despite that, in his own way, he’s as gentle as can be with his league. Give me a young Diana who’s getting spat on and ripped apart by the media in a way not one of her male teammates get.

And she’s Wonder Woman. She shouldn’t be affected by it. And she is, anyway. Bruce relates to that in an uncomfortable degree.

Cryptid!Alfred, who is actually immortal. Like, he cannot die for forever - he did once, during the war, and after that... for some reason, he kept coming back, completely without any additional magical help. He sometimes dies again, and then mysteriously comes back on the next morning, as if nothing happened. Bruce used to it at some point, so instead of asking questions (Alfred has no answers, anyway) he just pretends that it is normal. He gaslights kids to think the same. Like, what do you mean he died, Damian? No, he is alrightish. Look in the kitchen, he is making us breakfast. It probably was just a bad dream.

So, when Jason dies and gets back? Oh, Alfred knows his grandson has the same curse/blessing. Because it wasn't the Lazarus Pit that brought Jason back after all, but some strange, unexplainable force. Perhaps, both of them are just bound to end up as guardians, as warriors and protectors - that's why they keep coming back.

...Nevertheless, it doesn't make their family less... anxious about the whole thing. These two from the other side? Oh, they absolutely enjoy their immortal hang-out hours.

Jason: What was your funniest death?

Alfred: I am going to say... that one time, when I was teaching young master Bruce using a hunting rifle, and he accidentally shot me. I came back in fifteen minutes, and, of course, a poor thing was sobbing, but afterwards he was doing all chores for a month. Wonderful days.

Jason: Damn, poor Brucie... My funniest gotta be that one time, when Roy and I got drunk, and I legit jumped off the building because I thought I can fly. Roy had never got sober that quick.

This is actually a really interesting way to think about Narutos character that now I kinda wish could be explored. Maybe theres a fan fic that delves into this aspect but ye.

Naruto isn’t obsessed with Sasuke and wants to bring him back to Konoha because he’s worried about his wellbeing. I mean, Naruto knows that Danzo sent Sai to assassinate Sasuke, but he still tries to drag him back to the village where Danzo has a lot of political power. So he clearly doesn’t priorize Sasuke’s safety over his own personal wishes.

Naruto is obsessed with Sasuke is because he acknowledged him as a friend… and then decided to end their friendship. Which is something Sasuke is within his rights to do, even if he’s doing it for self-destructive reasons. But Naruto can’t accept that decision, because it threatens the coping mechanism he used to deal with his trauma and extreme neglect. He still believes that respect is something he has to earn, that if he becomes Hokage the villagers will finally acknowledge him and stop treating him as a monster. He survived his horrible childhood by hoping for a better future.

Sasuke’s rejection of their friendship threatens that childish fantasy, because if Sasuke acknowledged Naruto and then changed his mind, then Konoha can also do it. Suddenly the future becomes uncertain, there’s no guarantee that people will stop treating him as a pariah. This is why Naruto says he can’t become Hokage if he can’t make Sasuke come back to the villiage. In his twisted logic, if he can’t “keep” Sasuke’s acknowledgement, there’s no way he can “keep” the villiage’s acknowledgement. He is treating Sasuke as an obstacle he has to overcome to achieve his dream of being Hokage, his dream of being loved and respected.

The problem is that, by giving Konoha the power to validate him, Naruto is also giving Konoha the power of invalidate him. He will never feel secure. Getting Sasuke to accept their friendship or becoming Hokage are band-aids on the gaping wound of his childhood trauma. As long as he depends on something outside himself to feel worthy of love and respect, he will always feel scared and empty. He needs to accept that “being treated like a human being” isn’t something a child should earn from the people around them. He needs to question his beliefs and grow.

Final manifestations for Book 7?

I'm trying REALLY hard not to build up any solid expectations, because I wanna go in ~fresh~! they're already so far away from anything I thought would happen (not in a bad way, I'm just accepting that I'm on Miss Yana's Wild Ride at this point and we're seeing this thing through 'til the end, by gum). so it's nothing too major, but:

they've been handing new crying expressions out like candy lately, I want to see some delicious Malleus tears.

honestly I want everyone to cry buckets. their tears sustain me. the more Silver angst specifically I get the happier I am.

So I have been watching Danny Phantom for the first time ever with my friends and I'd kind of previously known about its reputation as a show whose fanbase dives a lot more into the lore than the show is willing to. And I guess I hadn't really understood why until now (I just finished Season 2!). Here's my sort of rambling thoughts on it.

Danny Phantom isn't a show about the horror of ghosts and the dead coexisting in the human realm. It's a show about dropping the most out of pocket lore implications you can imagine on people who in turn say things that would kill a therapist dead equally out of pocket, and then neither are addressed but the watcher has to live with the ghost of the plot that is right behind them but they can't turn around.

DP is a little hit and miss in places, but the very thing that drives people nuts about it is actually I think maybe its greatest strength: it really pulls off show, don't tell effectively. How much of that is intentional is up for debate, but the best episodes kinda leave you wondering, or sputtering like "UH, HEY, BACK UP - HEY BACK UP AND UNPACK THAT -" Is Danny's human body technically alive somehow, or is he a walking corpse? Does Danny have a door in the Ghost Zone? Were Vlad's clones feeling and sentient as they melted into ectoplasm, despite Danny's guess that they weren't? What does it say about Danny that he still erased his parents' memories after finding out they'd accept him as he is?

I think the genius of not answering these questions directly is that it's both funnier AND scarier not to. We can laugh about how fucked up it is and kinda hold our heads like "bro.... did they really just imply that, holy shiiiiiit", and that's really consistent with the emotional core of the show as this knife's-edge dance between teen comedy and horror superhero. Fully explaining the lore or being more direct about how the information is conveyed by and to the characters tips that balance and changes the show into something else, for better or for worse. And I really earnestly like it as it is, even if it's very of its time (sexism.......)! It's a really fun show with some depth to it.

Anyway, I can't wait to watch season 3! I sure hope all these wonderful qualities I like about it hold up!
